VidAngel Roku App now has Search and PIN

set_top_boxesVidAngel private beta launched on Roku two weeks ago and it is already the favorite device for VidAngel users! In response to customer requests, we just added two new features to the app:

PIN for purchases – this means that if someone grabs the remote they will not be able to purchase a movie unless they know your passcode. Set up your PIN at vidangel.com/roku

Search – You can now search for your movies. This was an important update because our library of HD movies is growing rapidly.

The VidAngel Roku update will show up within 24 hours. To access the VidAngel update now, refresh your channels on your Roku by visiting:

Settings > System update or Settings > Player info and checking for an update.

  1. The upgrades to your service are all steps in the right direction and I applaud your renewed commitment to better communicate along the way. This communication – even for mere incremental upgrades – are crucial to maintaining the overall level of customer confidence necessary to make this project successful in the long term.

A question: Are there any plans to make per movie filter setting available on the Roku rather than making them via computer? I realize global settings can be made but this really doesn’t address the need for movie by movie adjustment. It would surely save an additional step of convenience, and in IMO, elevate the VidAngel experience considerably. As a consumer, my goal would be to enjoy a beginning to end cinematic experience all on the Roku without any further need to use the computer interface other than for account maintenance etc.

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for the suggestion David. That's definitely something we're planning. We've already designed the interface. However, in terms of priorities, we're first focused on a way to provide feedback on movies within the Roku before we do a per movie filter tool on the Roku.

The experience will be much better with the filter adjustments within the Roku app for sure. One step at a time. Thanks for the feedback.

  2. Hi – for us non techies who are not understanding the technospeak, how can we get movies on the Roku? I conducted a search on my Roku and was unable to find Vid Angel anywhere. When I tried to register, I was unable to because I needed a ‘friend’s email address.’ I would like to subscribe to your service or will happily pay a fee to view your movies. Just need help figuring out how to do this. I did try to look through your site for help but nothing specific enough to help someone like me.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Stacey

    1. Stacey, we're in private beta right now and we're adding people as fast as we can. Eventually we'll have an app right in the Roku store.

    1. What resolution do the VidAngel HD movies play in over Roku? Is it 720p or 1080p?

      source:va_support_update_bot

    2. It depends on your internet connection and your Roku settings. It will do 1080p when the connection is good enough and the Roku is set to 1080p (most Rokus are set to 720p by default)

  3. I was super excited to see the ROKU app. After our first movie though, IronMan2, I can’t say that we had a positive experience. WE ended up just turning it off. The constant buffering was too much to take. We watch all of our programming on our Roku or our streaming bluray players and with Amazon, Netflix and nor Sling tv we have no buffering issues at all. We have great internet speeds and we never have issues, but the VidAngel service was awful. We were buffering every couple of minutes. We really love the idea and hopefully your technology will catch up.

    1. Tyson, we're sorry for your poor experience. At 10:30pm, we implemented a new content delivery mechanism that has significantly increased performance. I'm going to give you a credit for your poor experience. Please let me know how the next attempt works out for you.

      MOVIE CREDIT ADDED: $2.00

    2. Thank you for the credit. We did try again and the experience was much better. WE will certainly try the service again.

  4. I have the vid angel channel on my Roku box and I went through settings, player info to grab the system update. However when I click on the channel on my Roku box nothing happens and the vid angel channel does not load. Is your app supported on Roku XD/S?

    1. Thank you for contacting our support and I apologize for the trouble. We support firmware version 4.1 or higher. You can confirm this by checking the settings > about and you should see the firmware version. Roku has released many versions, but I think the XD/S is supported. If so, something may have gone wrong during the beta channel installation. I'd suggest to remove the channel, restart the roku, and then follow the instructions again at http://www.vidangel.com/roku . Please let me know if you run into trouble again. Thanks for being patient and using VidAngel!

    2. Jed,
Thanks for the response and unfortunately I am only at 3.1 firmware and I don’t see a way to update it.  Am I out of luck at this point?  I tried removing and reading the channel but seeing the same issue still unfortunately.
      Thanks,
      Christian

    3. Christian,

We're working to find a way to support older versions of Roku, but we haven't found a solution yet. Be patient with us as we try to expand the supported Roku devices. Or update your device or get a device that supports 4.1 and higher.

      Thanks,
      Neal

  5. I’m not quite clear on how the “buyback” feature works. It sounds like I buy a movie for, say $20, and then sell it back after watching, leaving me with a balance of $18. Then do I have to add another $2 (to bring the total back up to $20) to get the next movie, meaning I always have a balance with you that basically works as a long-term deposit? Can I ever get it back?

    2. Hi Trevor, you understand it perfectly. You can get it back by buying a movie you want to own for good with your credit.
The buy-back program is not for cash or a refund to your credit card.

We're working on a simple video today to make this super obvious because a handful of customers have had this same question.

  6. Please note in order for the ROKU channel to be added when you click on the button in VidAngel, you must have already logged into ROKU on your PC. I spent a lot of frustrated time trying to get it added and selecting update on my ROKU before discovering this. If you are not logged into ROKU, the Vidangel button takes you to the ROKU site where you are prompted to login, then after logging in ROKU prompts you for the code to add a private or beta channel and it is not automatically entered (and I don’t think you are providing that code separately).

    1. Paul, thanks for this pointer. This will help our support team and we appreciate you taking time to mention it!

    1. 128k stereo. We're working on 256k surround sound, but it's not ready yet. Thanks

        1. Thanks!

Great company, great work! Looking forward to renting and trying it out!

        1. Sorry Ben…no ETA yet. Our newest content prep process is anticipating surround sound. We will not forget it. This and closed captions are extremely important features.

  7. Can’t figure out how to get subtitles to work when playing back with a Ruku player. It gets frustrating when watching Game of Thrones. Tried to watch Women in Gold but it was completely unwatchable without the German to English subtitles, that we ended up stoping the movie 30 minutes in and selling it back. I found a filter setting called “Gestures and Captions”, but that didn’t seem to work. Is there something I am missing?

  8. i have a roko. i added vidangel channel at roku site. i updated my roku and channel was added. i want to watch channel. but it tells me to to go to vidangel.com/roko and enter a code. where is this place in space?

    1. I am getting an error message that says “unable to authenticate user” on my roku. Can you explain why this is happening

      source:va_support_update_bot

    2. This error either means one of two things.

      1. The Roku is unable to link to your account at VidAngel.com
      2. The Roku is not connected to the internet.

To fix the first issue, the Roku stores data in its registry related to each channel that can only be removed after a restart of the Roku (after removing the VidAngel channel). If you follow these steps, it should get you back on track:

      1. Remove the VidAngel Channel
      2. Restart the Roku (pull the power plug out and plug it back in).
      3. Follow the steps again at http://www.vidangel.com/roku

To fix the Second issue, make sure the Roku is connected to the internet.

      1. From the main Roku menu, click on the settings menu
      2. Click on "Network."
      3. Confirm your Roku is connected to the internet.
      4. You may try to open a few other channels and make sure they can access content to confirm the internet is working.

  9. I recently discovered Vidangel through social media and I’m intrigued by it. I have that app available on my Roku TV. Before getting into it, I am wondering if closed captions/subtitles for the hard of hearing are even available? If not, will it ever be available and when do you anticipate it will be? Thank you
