If you’re watching The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime Video, you’ll hear more than just beach waves, beautifully placed Taylor Swift songs, and teenagers whispering about who likes who. You’ll also get a healthy dose of profanity—plenty more than what Jenny Han actually wrote into the books.

Books vs. Show: Where All That Swearing Came From

In the novels, the profanity is light. A handful of swear words here and there, but nothing that would make you clutch your pearls or scramble for the mute button. They’re easy reads, perfectly sentimental, and (mostly) PG.

The show, though? Different story. They sprinkled in “extra flavor” that wasn’t on the page. And by flavor, we mean F-words. A lot of them. Season one alone clocks in at 179 counts of profanity and 40 f-bombs. By season three, you’re looking at 276 counts of profanity and 60 F-bombs. To put this in perspective, the average TV-14 show contains about 15-30 instances of profanity per episode. TSITP significantly exceeds this average.

If you came for the Jenny Han beach romance, you may not want all the language that rides shotgun with the TV adaptation. Especially if you’re watching with actual teenagers (or your mother-in-law, who will ask out loud, “What books are you allowing your daughter to read?”).

How to Filter Out TSITP’s Profanity with VidAngel

That’s where VidAngel comes in. We let you keep the love triangles, the Taylor Swift needle drops, and the emotional chaos of whether Belly should pick Conrad or Jeremiah, without the constant language barrage.

Because honestly, juggling a love triangle with two brothers is already enough of a hurdle. Jeremiah rage-baits you every Wednesday night—no extra seasoning required. He’s already pushing for 70% cacao; let’s keep movie night at 0% profanity. That’s our thing. We each get one thing.
