How It Works

Gone are the days of automatic edits. With Classic Mode, VidAngel pauses your movie or show every time something sketchy pops up—think a stray F-bomb, a steamy scene, or that one explosion you didn’t see coming. A pop-up appears on screen with three options:

• Fast-forward? Skip the offending bit entirely.
• Mute? Silence it and pretend it never happened.
• Squirm in silence? Watch it unfold while you decide if the kids need a sudden snack break.

No pre-set filters, no AI magic—just you, your remote, and a split-second decision, every single time. We’re calling it “filtering, the old-fashioned way,” inspired by the days when parents had to lunge for the mute button or invent elaborate distractions on the fly. Think of it as a throwback to the VHS era, but with better resolution and worse reflexes.

Why Classic Mode?

We’ve heard your feedback—okay, maybe not your feedback, but someone’s—and we’re leaning into our recent timestamp experiments. You loved seeing exactly when we cut the bad stuff, so we thought, why not let you handle it live? It’s interactive, it’s nostalgic, and it’s a workout for your decision-making skills. Imagine watching Rocky and pausing every time Apollo Creed lands a punch to debate if it’s too much for little Timmy. Or tackling Jurassic World one dino chomp at a time, pop-up by pop-up. It’s cinema as a choose-your-own-adventure book, minus the fun of turning pages.

Early Tester Feedback

Our beta users have been… vocal. “I muted 47 swears in Saving Private Ryan before I gave up,” said Karen from Omaha. “My thumb hurts, but I feel empowered.” Meanwhile, Steve from Boise called it “the most stressful family movie night ever—like playing whack-a-mole with my values.” We’re taking that as a win.

Try It Today

Classic Mode rolls out today, April 1st, across all VidAngel platforms. Just toggle it on in settings, grab your remote, and prepare for a viewing experience that’s equal parts control and chaos. Filtering’s never been this personal—or this exhausting.

Update: April Fools! Classic Mode isn’t real—yet. We’ll stick to filtering the easy way so you don’t have to play remote roulette. But if you secretly want this, let us know. We’ve got timestamps to spare.

And don’t even get us started on the importance of name-calling. How else are you supposed to find out who your real friends and enemies are? It’s not like you could just, you know, talk to them and figure it out like a normal person. This is how misinformation gets spread.

We are painfully aware this serene behavior is happening all around us in the real world. You go into a grocery store, and someone is speaking to a store clerk with their inside voices and pleasantries. Kids at school playing tag without yelling profanities. But the world should look more like what we see in movies and TV shows. Less civility. More depravity. You deserve a break from all that vanilla.

But fear not, dear reader, because VidAngel has heard your lack of cries for help. We’ve been hard at work building a feature nobody asked for but everyone so desperately needs…the ability to add more profanity and sexual innuendos! Don’t let a good plotline get in the way of what matters most.

In the midst of utter chaos and uncertainty, Hollywood came out with a troubling statement, “These are dark times for us all. To our directors, writers, and producers, we know that not objectifying our actors is unthinkable. For many, your biggest nightmare is now your reality. People will have to enjoy your movies for their storyline and your actors’ performances.”

Producers are deeply concerned this new policy will foster better morals and respect in the workplace. Many have already threatened to strike in protest. Only one thing can be certain, Hollywood as we know it is over. 

Just kidding. Hollywood is still the same, and that’s why VidAngel is here. Because we believe that romance in movies is possible with clothes on, conversations can be had without curse words, and action movies can be enjoyed without someone’s head getting cut off. Spoiler alert: People sometimes like shows for the plot.
